A pet camera without a subscription
Short answer: yes, you can have recordings, smart alerts and pet detection with no monthly plan by running the software yourself. OpenPetCam is free and open source; you pay for a small server you own (about $5 a month on AWS Lightsail) and a Thingino-compatible camera, and nothing else.
Why most pet cameras have a subscription
A typical consumer camera streams to the maker's cloud. Storing your video and running detection there costs the maker money every month, so history, highlights and "smart" alerts usually sit behind a plan. The camera also stops being useful if that service changes or closes.
How a self-hosted pet camera works
With OpenPetCam the camera sends video over an encrypted WireGuard tunnel to your server. That server keeps a rolling 6-hour recording, runs pet detection, moves the camera to find your pet, sends alerts, and serves the app to your phone. No third party sees the video.
What you get without paying monthly
- Live video with sound on your phone
- Automatic search: the camera pans and tilts until your pet is back in frame
- Detection that tells your pet from toys, trained on your own camera
- Today and a two-week Diary with naps, activity, barks and a nightly highlight reel
- Alerts for barking, distress sounds, camera offline and a blocked view
- Invites for family, and automatic nightly updates with rollback
What you pay
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| OpenPetCam software | free (Apache-2.0) |
| Server (AWS Lightsail nano or similar) | about $5/month |
| Camera | one-time: any Thingino-supported pan/tilt camera |
What you give up
Honest trade-offs: you do the setup yourself (a guided installer handles most of the work, but you should be comfortable in a terminal), you flash open firmware onto the camera, and OpenPetCam is built and tested for dogs first. There's no treat tosser.
